This course is for students of the language who have completed a beginner’s course (such as our own Learning Greek with Plato) or who have worked through a beginner’s textbook.

In the first session we will revise the morphology of Ancient Greek and in following classes we will discuss the syntax of the Ancient Greek simple, compound and complex sentence, with a focus on the varieties of principle and subordinate clauses. We will use examples and read brief passages from a variety of classical authors (including the tragic poets, Aristophanes, Plato, Xenophon and Thucydides) to see these elements in context. We will also discuss the differences among the Greek dialects and read excerpts from Homer and Herodotus.
